PROGRAM: Connecting Threads - Underground Railroad Quilt (Zoom meeting)
Presenters: Shirley Cowans and Monica Riley
Presenters: Shirley Cowans and Monica Riley
The program covered the history of quilting and how quilting helped slaves escape. Quilt squares developed by our ancestors were used to help them escape from the slave owners after they had been freed by the Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862. Each quilt block provided information such as The Wagon Wheel block meant "Pack provisions; its time to leave."
